Sophia Regency is an up and coming private residential development that is located in District 9, Core Central Region of the island. The Mount Sophia Hills is one of the few that still exist today in Singapore’s Central Region. This hill has been long known as a residential enclave in the inner city of great importance starting from the 19th century. This area is home to many middle class as well as upper class residents ever since those early days. This neighbourhood is the ideal presentation of Singapore’s rich architectural history with numerous styles and class of buildings constructed via the estate’s urban revolution.
Mount Sophia’s name was initially known as Bukit Selelgie or Selegie Hill. Selegie means spear made of wood that is hardened and sharpened using fire and speculations has it connected to “wooden –dart” in Malay. Another explanation is that “seligi” is a nibong palm that used to make this kind of spears. Other explanation include a well-known priate chief of Bugis descent and those living there giving the name of this chief as “Orang Selegie”.
Bukit Selegie is adjacent to Bukit Rawa which was later named as Mount Emily. In 1823, Bukit Selegie was occupied by Cpt William Flint and his family. He renamed Bukit Selegie to Mount Sophia later in 1823 to honor the 2nd wife of Sir Stamford Raffles, Mary Sophia. And throughout the years, there were numerous houses that were constructed on the Mount Sophia. One of those was Eu Villa which belonged to Eu Tong Sen, which was torn down later unfortunately. Eversince, various different communities were attracted to Mount Sophia to establish their permanent homes. Sophia Flats which was constructed in the 1930s as well as Church of Christ Malaya, constructed in 1958 stand in the entrance of Mount Sophia. The Mount Sophia is the first residential estate that is popular with residents of middle class.
Other than the private housings, the hills of Mount Sophia were also home to various education and religious institutions. Some these buildings still remain and conserved today to mark the milestones of architectural and historical. One of these is the former building of the Trinity College Chapel which is undergoing conservation and preservation for development of new town. Another such building will be the Methodist Girls’ School which originally was located in Short Street between 1900 and 1933 and later shifted to the Adis Road. The first high-rise education institution in Singapore, Selegie Primary, is still standing on Selegie Road. On the hill of Mount Sophia, the Saint Margaret’s Primary School is still operating there.
Mount Sophia hills has a celebrated history that is shown by the series of architectural styles and old buildings which represents how the core of the city has revolved in terms of economic, culture and social over the past centuries. The resident that are presently and in future making the Mount Sophia homes will definitely feel pride as a resident of this glorious neighbourhood.
