The lands were bought from the Little family as well as the Alsagoff Family and turning many of them into plantations for coconuts. The wealthy businessman also generously allowed many of these lands he had acquired for public usage.

During the 1950s and 1960s, came the establishments of iconic buildings such as the Odeon Cinem, the Roxy Theatre as well as Tay BuanGuan supermarket as well as department store in the Roxy estate which is bounded by the Katong and Joo Chiat estates.

In 1991, 518 buildings located in the Joo Chiat neighbourhood was gazette for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.
